IdentityCHANDON ARGENTINA

Arriving at CHANDON Estate, in Mendoza, sixty-five years on from its founding, your eyes are still drawn to the mountain view. But if CHANDON’s pioneers were to arrive here today, they might not recognize the place.Robert-Jean de Vogüé search for the best terroirs turned into an epic journey. Eventually, his heroic 2CV brought him and Renaud Poirier, CHANDON Argentina first Chief winemaker, to a place near Mendoza: the high, pure land they had dreamed of. Its unique situation and dramatic climate, with its wild seasonal and daily temperature variations, thrilled them.CHANDON Argentina is nested, in Agrelo near Luján de Cuyo, in the Andean foothills, at an elevation of above 1000m and up to 1700m above sea level– dizzy heights that would be considered extreme in most other wine-producing countries.
I’m from Mendoza I was born here. There’s nowhere else quite like it on the planet. It’s an extreme climate, a desert. There are no bodies of water nearby to give a moderating effect. But what we do have are the magical, awe-inspiring Andes mountains a marvel of nature. They’re a 7,000m barrier between us and the Pacific, so we’re in a rain shadow. Vines thrive on limited water. They are also hardy plants that adapt well. But fruit does need some water. All our water is Andean meltwater. Our conditions give our wine a very special quality. You get wines with absolute, untainted purity of expression.

TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE AND RESPONSIBLE FUTURE

At CHANDON Argentina as at all our estates, we take our approach to sustainability, responsible farming and the people we rely on very seriously. 100% of our 365ha of vineyards are environmentally certified and use precision drip irrigation since 1990, to use the the smallest amount of water delivered to each plant’s roots at the optimum time. 164ha are dedicated to promoting biological corridors. These areas with native vegetation are shelters for insectivorous native birds and allow a natural pest control. Since our inception, we have also put in place several social initiatives, from art instruction at local schools to basket-weaving from waste plastic.Educate in Harvest is one of these as well as seven Educational programs implemented in 21 rural schools since 2004 benefiting more than 4,000 people every year.“Our programs have an impact on more than 1,500 kids and 60 teachers from 18 rural public schools close to the winery”.
